Smooth Start Plus, South Wales

Smooth Starts Plus was founded by Sam Gately – an Occupational Therapist whose professional practice in the UK includes work within specialist learning disability teams, secure and locked rehabilitation hospitals and specialist residential educational settings, as well as supporting children affected by parental substance misuse and child advocacy within child protection teams.

Overseas Sam has also gained valuable experience working voluntarily with children, families and communities in countries including Belarus, Croatia, Moldova, Sierra Leone and Tanzania, all of which brings a rich and vibrant culture to shape the values base of Smooth Starts Plus:

Vision: All children should be integrated within their local communities

Mission: To provide support strategies for children whose behaviour results in barriers to accessing a range and balance of opportunities, in order to engage in meaningful activity to assist with their physical, social and emotional growth and wellbeing.

Values: Equal opportunities for all children. Access to individualised local support. Skilled shared understanding of needs. Family support. Preventative model of care

To achieve this, Smooth Starts Plus employs and invests in a diverse skilled workforce, recognising the importance of positive relationships combined with professional competency to deliver the support required.

This consists of a Management Team, the development of a Leadership Team (including transition coordinators, intensive support workers, a social scheme team and increased clinical and therapies team) an established Link worker team and a direct Support Team.

Although working within different roles – all of our team work in close collaboration to ensure commitment to the same ethos, which the organisation scaffolds with quality training and professional development opportunities.

Smooth Starts Plus office base is in Taffs Well, South Wales, and our Skills Development Centre ‘The Loft’ is based in Whitchurch, Cardiff.
